Your right, do follow attracts a lot more spam but does encourage comments, however, I would say it encourages 1 off comments rather than the building of an actual community and loyal readership

It is benifical that some external links are followed from sites as Google likes to see inbound and outbound links from a site as it is natural for the internet to built on links-good for SEO one can say.

Remove no follow is double edge. You get more content and traffic, but you have to deal with more spammer.

Indeed removing the nofollow in the comment URL is a great incentive for visitors to leave comments in your blog. Many people use nofollow as a way to discourage spammers.
But believe me the only thing that would discourage a potential spammer is forcing him to give up his time in exchange for whatever he’s trying to do. In any relathionship it’s give and take for both sides.
